Tanfield Lake is a stocked
day ticket water near West Tanfield that offers exceptional still
water fly fishing in tranquil surroundings. It is situated in
the valley of the River Ure and the water supports a large head
of rainbow trout along with some very wily resident browns. Aquatic
and wind blown terrestrial insect life abounds in and around
this former gravel pit - which means that the fish feed naturally.
An imitative approach is therefore recommended and it is often
necessary to "match the hatch" if one wants to be reasonably
successful.
If conditions are right
one can also experience the most exciting evening rise at this
venue - when the whole surface of the lake becomes alive with
free rising fish of all sizes!
