A Note about Fly Fishing Instruction in England and Wales
- a
nd probably Scotland as well!

First published on 1 March 2008
If you are looking for a fly fishing instructor in England or Wales you can be forgiven for being confused. This short note seeks to clarify the position. I myself am still confused about the situation in Scotland, but my understanding is that you will find instructors from the three organisations listed below available there too.
If anyone would like to add comment or take issue with anything I have said on this page please contact me and I will amend any statement that is factually incorrect.
Firstly, you need to be clear about just what you are looking for. Some instructors specialise in teaching you to cast, some will offer all round instruction and some are professional game angling guides. There are also those who offer everything from fly dressing to accompanied overseas fishing trips.
Secondly, you need to understand the various qualifictions that will be quoted. There are essentially three organisations providing fly fishing instructor (or coaching) qualifications in England and Wales at present:
Salmon and Trout Association
S&TA

Game Angling Instructors Association
GAIA

Association of Advanced Professional Game Angling Instructors
AAPGAI

Full details about the Instructor Qualifications that these three organisations have to offer can be found on their Websites along with a list of practitioners, their locations and contact details. I will leave it to you to decide which instructor you wish to employ. But in my opinion an instructor who has been qualified by any of these three organisations will provide highly proffessional and informed training. In general terms, the more highly qualified the instructor is, the more you can expect to pay for his or her services.
